Until I started writing it out, I hadn’t realized how many problems I’d just been living with/putting off because I don’t know how to fix them. So here is a list of the current issues that need to be addressed:

-Rattle/clunk in left rear suspension. This sounds like something is loose, but I can’t find anything when I crawl under there. It was doing it this summer & I found the lower shock bushing was shot. Put 2 rear shocks in and it went away until last month when it came back just as bad.

-Fueling filling issue/code P0441. This has been going on since August. It randomly throws code P0441(evap purge valve) and I have to fill the tank super-slow or the gas pump kicks off. I have found listings for a purge valve along for $45 which doesn’t match anything under the back of the car, or a charcoal canister for $200+ which includes a purge valve. Don’t want to just throw parts at it, but don’t have the tools to diag exactly what is bad.

-Starting issue. This one is brand new. When it is really cold it takes a couple of tries of putting the clutch to the floor and turning the key until the starter turns over, and even then it sounds like power to it is getting interrupted. Not sure if it is the clutch switch or a starter connection. Doesn’t happen when it is not bloody cold, so it will be fun to diag that.

-Passenger power window switch won’t raise window. Works from the driver’s master switch. This started working again, but I should probably throw a new switch in there anyway.

-A/C busted. A/C hasn’t worked since the spring, tried to charge it and found the low-side pressure was up around 100psi. Low priority until the summer.

What makes this even worse is that it is cold out and I can’t work in my garage because one bay is full of truck parts & snowblowers and the other bay has the motorcycle, a vending machine I’m turning into a Nuka-Cola machine, and the start of a Fallout-style Fault Door I’m building for a local convention.

Came into some cash recently, so I may just do the “throw money at the problem” solution and drop it off at the dealer for them to figure it all out.

whats the end product going to look like with the door? would this be like a bedroom door?

It is going to be a 7’ tall circular vault door, with a matching “wall” that is fits in. With the vault door rolled “closed”, tis will be the backdrop for the stage where the musical acts and such will be performing. For the fashion show it will be moved forward and the door rolled “open” to be what the models enter through.

For the P0441, the process sucks for diagnosing it for how minor it is of a problem. Involves letting the car rest and then doing vacuum tests on the system.

A/C could be a fuse. It happened in my friend’s xB, everything seemed right, just wasn’t cold, no leaks, plenty of pressure, replaced the $0.15 fuse and it worked again.

Your starting issue sounds like the battery may be going bad. When is the last time it was changed?

2 years ago. It starts fine when it does, no slow cranking. it sounds more like a connection is being cut fast crank, a stutter then fast crank again.

Strange. Can you hear if the solenoid is actually clicking on and off when that happens? that could help confirm if you’re right about a sensor issue or maybe the solenoid itself. you might be able to stick your head under the drivers side dash and the clutch sensor, they tend to be really simple momentary contact switches that contact the pedal at the top of its travel.

The interruption is momentary and there is a noise that I suspect is the starter gear crashing back into the flywheel after partially retracting when the starter loses power(not the screech of a start trying to engage on a running motor because the motors hasn’t caught and isn’t spinning that fast). I have looked quickly at the switch and it is not loose in it’s mount and the connector is firmly attached.

I need to get under the thing and look at the connections on the starter, but haven’t had a chance when it wasn’t both dark & freezing cold outside.

I do despise electrical gremlins, at your point I’d probably take it to a mechanic.

The emissions think, probably continue ignoring that. Sounds like the valve is sticking you might be able to clean it and stop that.
